Early on in my journey of trying to become a [Dramatic chorus of trumpets] Real Author.
I saw a request on a local web community page asking if anybody would be so kind, and help them write a story based loosely on their own life. My chest puffed out with the knowledge I had just published my first SciFi novel on Amazon. At last here was a chance to prove to someone I could string some words together and lead them to success in the literary world...
My goodness, I was so WRONG. After they had verbally attacked my wife on social media and elsewhere, I pulled the plug. Hoping that would be the last of the unpleasantries. I went back to writing and monitoring sales in my author account. After a steady trickle of sales for a couple of months, sales had stopped dead. I initially shrugged my shoulders in a vain attempt to convince myself that things would soon pick up.
I embarked on an advertising campaign and pushed my novel at every opportunity—still Zero Sales.
I realised it was time to do some investigation regarding the dead sales revenue of my book. I was naive about the way things trulyI realised it was time to do some investigation regarding the dead sales revenue of my book. I was naive about the way things truly worked in the publishing world. So, I reduced my eBook to £zero cost for one week's period, hoping to ignite some interest in my book.
The detectives amongst you are probably already shouting at the screen about the outcome of this misguided resolution. Okay, I will nod my head at your superior intellect.
The problem was simple. I took another look at the product page on Amazon and noticed someone had left a 1*review. "Total crap - do not buy..." A little bit of technical investigation revealed that the instigator had a 90% chance of being the vindictive author I was doing the ghostwriting for. My only recourse to this issue was to start writing using a pen name so my books wouldn't again be blacklisted.
This brings me nicely onto the stuff I am working on / published under various nom-de-plume's.
